Terry

Vice President, Project Development

underwoodTerry has nearly a quarter century of experience in the engineering profession, first working as a design engineer for a Department of Defense contractor in his native Tennessee. He joined U.S. Engineering in July 2006 to fill, at the time, the newly established position of Preconstruction Manager for the Tennessee division.  Terry was recently promoted to Vice President, Procurement and is responsible for the Tennessee Division's business development, estimating, and preconstruction services.

Chief among his many responsibilities for this growing division is securing negotiated work. That means getting involved at the conceptual stage and tapping his vast engineering skills and experience to help bid and complete projects, whether in a design-build or design-assist role. As technically demanding as his job is, there is an equally critical business development component.

"Our clients see us as a tool to help them remain competitive, and we often provide valuable budgetary, conceptual design, market trends and constructability input to a project early," Terry says. "Our job is a good balance between engineering knowledge and project financials."

Terry came in with a strong technical background, as both a licensed professional engineer and LEED accredited professional. He credits mastering the financial side to the career development opportunities he found at U.S. Engineering. "Our staff, both locally and in the other divisions, have been instrumental in helping me ‘up the curve' in that respect," he says. "The company has involved me considerably in many aspects of the overall operations, from financial performance to operations. This glimpse at the solid, working process in both Colorado and Kansas City has helped our growth in Tennessee."

Terry and his wife, Lisa, have two children, Zachary (14) and Madison Grace (11).
