U.S. Engineering partners with First Hand Foundation in Kansas City
U.S. Engineering is pleased to announce a new partnership with the First Hand Foundation in Kansas City by becoming a major sponsor of the "Healthe Kids Program." In 1995, Cerner Corporation, a leading supplier of healthcare information technology headquartered in Kansas City founded First Hand. First Hand is a nonprofit organization that assists individual children who have health-related needs when insurance and other financial resources have been exhausted. The Foundation covers the costs of clinical necessities such as medicine, medical equipment and travel related to a child's care when they are not covered by insurance and families cannot afford them. One hundred percent of the donations made to First Hand go directly to children. Since 1995, First Hand has disbursed more than $7 million and assisted more than 42 children in 57 countries. The Healthe Kids was created two years ago as a community-based health screening program for children. It is currently a pilot project and is in need of additional resources to grow. The goal of the program is to reach children who may not have the opportunity to receive an annual health screening. By working closely with communities and schools, Healthe Kids brings groups of doctors in to schools systems to provide screenings, identify health issues, and make appropriate referrals to families. Most important, families without financial resources can receive help from First Hand when a child requires additional services or procedures.
Currently, Healthe Kids is able to screen approximately 5000 school children in grades Kindergarten through sixth grade. With U.S. Engineering's assistance, we are going to be able to increase that number by over 40% this next year. We are excited about being able to have such an immediate impact on an innovative new community program at a time when the needs of children and families are increasing dramatically. This work is not only consistent with our ongoing efforts to give back to the communities where we operate, but is one more way for us to put our five Core Values in to action.
