CENTRAL PLANTS
IRS Processing Center
Kansas City, MO
This massive design-build encompasses approximately 1.2 million square feet of construction, including three new IRS Processing buildings with connected parking garage, renovation of an existing 1930s U.S. Post Office for new IRS offices, an underground tunnel, cafeteria with commercial kitchen, and a new warehouse building.
The project included a new central chilled water plant to serve the new buildings as well as the renovated Post Office. The new processing building utilizes multiple central air-handling units to provide conditioned air via an underfloor air distribution system. This approach utilizes less energy, allows for future interior changes, and helped achieve the desired LEED® certification for the project.
U.S. Engineering was the lead mechanical contractor for the project, directing all design and preconstruction services as well as HVAC and plumbing construction activities.
