CENTRAL PLANTS

University of Kansas Hospital Central Utility Plant
Kansas City, KS

The ever-expanding University of Kansas Hospital and medical center campus continues to push demand for HVAC as the facilities multiply. The new, separate and additional central utility plant, built to accommodate current loads and future expansion, will initially have four chillers for a total of 6,000 tons of cooling, along with three boilers with a total capacity of more than 90,000 lbs/hr.

Other building systems include:

  • compressed air
  • medical compressed air
  • softened water
  • fuel oil (complete w/32,000-gallon underground storage, free cooling system)

The project also included the distribution of new utility feeds throughout the campus. The toughest challenge was the separation of the new central utility plant from the existing Applegate Energy Center. The separation required over 40 main tie-ins and six different total system shutdowns that included: steam and condensate, domestic water (soft, hot and domestic), medical air and gases (nitrous oxide, oxygen and medical air), fire protection, compressed air, natural gas and chilled water while keeping the campus totally operational and functional at all times. The two major tenants of the campus will achieve total separation upon completion of the project.
