The $3.5 million project on the UMKC campus included a complete demolition, retrofit and expansion of a 35-year-old central utility plant. Along with the new 5,000- to 5,800-ton plant, an additional 3,000-foot underground loop was installed.
U.S. Engineering won the 3-month design-assist, budget-based conceptual estimate competition Our unique preconstruction and estimating process proved pivotal in both budgeting and procurement. Post-selection negotiation was also valuable in subsequent price development and budget control.
The new plant was the all-important first step in the campus’s Central Utilities Performance Contracting project, projected to save $1.6 million annually thanks to increased efficiency.
