The Richard Bolling Federal Building
Kansas City, Missouri

The award-winning Richard Bolling Federal Building in Kansas City is home to an array of government offices and agencies, comprising 18 stories and approximately 1.2 million square feet. In 1999, the GSA Heartland Region began a $200 million renovation project to modernize the 45-year-old building. To maintain a high level of occupancy during the renovation, the project has been divided into four phases. Phase four encompasses ARRA funding for renovations.

Involved in the mechanical portion of the renovation, U.S. Engineering Company was responsible for demolition and replacement of multiple built-up air handling units, new data room systems, distribution piping and plumbing systems.

The occupied condition of the building required detailed coordination with the general contractor and other trades to assure no impact to the occupants. The final phases will include the addition of environmentally friendly components that will make it possible for the building to qualify for LEED® certification.

In 2004 The Bolling building was recognized by the GSA and was awarded the Citation in Design Award. This year the Bolling Building received a Modernization Citation in the GSA 2008 Design Awards program.
