K-State Olathe Innovation Campus and National Animal Health and Food Safety Institute
Olathe, KS

U.S. Engineering was selected as the mechanical contractor for the National Animal Health and Food Safety Institute, the first building constructed as part of Kansas State University’s new Olathe Innovation Campus (KOIC). This LEED®-registered building is located in a park-like setting on 38 acres in southern Johnson County, in a suburb of Kansas City.

The facility will include a combination of research labs, research kitchen, classrooms and offices. Each type of space requires unique HVAC and plumbing systems. The HVAC system has an energy-efficient 750 ton chilled water plant using magnetic bearing chiller and an 8,000 mbh heating hot water plant using condensing boilers. The central plant is designed to expandable to serve future buildings.

Early preconstruction involvement was required to evaluate HVAC systems to find the most feasible HVAC system to meet LEED requirements. The facility is currently seeking LEED® Silver Certification.

The $28 million Institute for Animal Health and Food Safety covers 100,000 square feet and opened in early 2011.
