Stowers Support Facility
BioMed Valley & Vivarium
Kansas City, MO
The Stowers Support Facility is an existing 280,000-square-foot warehouse and storage facility in South Kansas City, Mo., that was modified to house new research laboratories, lab support, a data center, vivarium and a new central plant to support facilities owned by Stowers Institute for Medical Research.
BioMed Valley Discoveries (BVD) is a for-profit translational R&D organization that develops basic biomedical discoveries into applications that improve human health. The facility will house a new incubator scale lab for BVD that provides flexibility to take research generated at the Institute and develop it for commercial uses.
BVD utilizes a SEMCO custom air-handling unit with a variable speed enthalpy recovery wheel, dedicated lab exhaust fan, and humidification with utilities from the central plant.
The central plant is fully redundant and utilizes two 275-ton McQuay Turbo-Core chillers, a two-cell cooling tower, and two 6,000-MBH Cleaver Brooks boilers. A primary/secondary chilled water system and primary/secondary hot water heating system support the building’s HVAC needs.
Phase 1 equipment was installed to allow the installation of two new chillers and boilers to facilitate the expansion of Phase 2. The HVAC systems communicate with a fully DDC BMS system, and the entire facility is served by a complex emergency generator system for uninterrupted service.
Redundant air handlers serve the vivarium with 100 percent outside air, heat recovery, constant volume Phoenix air control valves and an exhaust system. The VHP system is served by a dedicated electric steam boiler system mounted on top of the vivarium complex.
The project was modeled and coordinated entirely in 3-D prior to installation of the systems.
