Energy Conservation
Denver, CO
Denver Public Schools called on U.S. Engineering to play an integral role in an ambitious energy-conservation project across 14 schools in the area. Conservation goals depended on the replacement of old, inefficient mechanical equipment with new, high-efficiency units that now control the IAQ for more than 1.2 million square feet.
The project team overcame a short project duration with exceptional pre-construction efforts so that DPS could begin the new academic year on time. Efforts included outstanding coordination among the project team to produce a workable schedule, value engineering and 3-D detailing. Coordination also provided for multiple crews to work simultaneously on all 14 projects.
Building systems work included:
- 15 force-draft sectional steam boilers and eight high-efficiency condensing boilers totaling more than 43,000 MBH
- Cooling capacity of 1,400 tons provided by five centrifugal chillers
- Restoration of two 100,000-CFM air-handling units, including the replacement of the direct and indirect cooling coils and pumps
- Replacement of two 15,000-CFM air-handling units
