The Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts has been referred to as the crown jewel in the re-development of downtown Kansas City. The project consists of a new 294,000-square-foot performing arts venue with two halls: the 1,800-seat proscenium theater and a 1,600-seat concert hall.
U.S. Engineering provided all heating, cooling, temperature controls and plumbing systems. The project had extremely stringent noise-limitation specifications, because no foreign sounds can be heard by patrons during a performance. Consequently, all mechanical system vibration and noise generation is isolated from the halls. More than 30,000 square feet of radiant floor heating/cooling is installed for the large, distinctive glass atrium that faces south.
Other building systems include:
- 2,000-ton variable primary chilled water system
- 5,600-KW electric boiler heating hot water system
- 17 custom air-handling units capable of producing a total of 330,000 CFM
The entire project was modeled completely 3-D design software. All design aspects were then complied into one common model for coordinating building trades before construction, which helped the project overcome numerous obstacles and meet completion objectives.
